DesignaKnit 8 and 9

Using the Gallery downloads

If you can select the destination folder… If your version of Windows gives you the option of selecting the folder where the download will arrive, navigate to your Documents folder, then to DesignaKnit 8 or DesignaKnit 9. Save into the Stitch patterns folder or the Shapes folder.

If you can’t select the destination folder… In Windows 7 and later versions it is likely that the files were automatically downloaded into your Download folder, in which case open a Computer or File Browser window and navigate there. Highlight the files (taking care to avoid any with numbers at the end), right click on them and from the pop-up menu select Copy. Navigate to your Documents folder, then to DesignaKnit 8. Open the Stitch patterns folder or the Shapes folder at this point and select Paste to complete the process.

Use a Gallery folder?… You might prefer to make a subfolder called Gallery inside the Documents / DesignaKnit 8 or 9 folder, and use it to contain all the stitch patterns and shapes from the Gallery. This will keep the downloaded files separate from your own. The integration of downloaded shapes with the associated downloaded stitch patterns will remain intact if you place both types of file into the same folder. The integration will also stay intact if you put the files into the default Stitch patterns and Shapes folders.

DesignaKnit 7

These instructions assume that DesignaKnit 7 is installed in the default folder C:\DK7.

If you can select the destination folder… If your version of Windows gives you the option of selecting the folder where the download will arrive, navigate to your C drive, then to the DK7 folder. Save into the COLPATS folder (for Stitch patterns) or the SHAPES folder at this point.

Open the COLPATS folder (for Stitch patterns) or the SHAPES folder at this point, and select Paste to complete the copying process.

Re-integrate… DesignaKnit 7 is a 16-bit program and cannot use long filenames. If you have downloaded an integrated shape file with associated stitch patterns you will need to rename files so that the filenames contain no spaces or punctuation and have a maximum length of 8 characters plus the .stp or .shp extension, and are stored in a folder where the total folder+filename length is no more than 55 characters. Having renamed the files, it will be necessary to re-integrate the shape with its stitch patterns.

If you are given the option of opening the file with DesignaKnit or saving the file, choose to save the file.

Please note that if Windows doesn’t allow you to select the destination folder, and a copy of the file has previously been downloaded and is still in your Downloads folder, Windows will append a (1) to the end of the newly downloaded filename. In the case of stitch patterns, changing the filename in this way will mean that DesignaKnit will ignore the newly downloaded file and will continue to integrate the shape file with the stitch pattern file whose filename hasn’t been changed.

If you are using Firefox, and want to print out the knitting instructions for a garment, you may find that they don’t print out properly, in which case please use another browser.
